Students from our Northam and Merredin ‘Follow the Dream’ programs had a great time at their Career Pathways Camp last week. Students met in Northam where they participated in ‘get to know you’ activities. They then travelled to Perth to stay at St. Catherine’s College where they met with student mentors and staff from the Dandjoo Darbalung program. Students heard about the Dandjoo program, the college, university, and TAFE study pathways, had a tour of the college and did some art activities. Everyone joined in a yarn around the fire pit, listened to the mentors’ journeys, followed by dinner in the college dining hall.

Day two started with a visit to Rio Tinto at Central Park to hear about some of the pathways and opportunities available in the mining industry. Students from the Cunderdin ‘Follow the Dream’ outreach program also joined for the rest of the day to visit the Edith Cowan University in Mt Lawley. After an amazing race around campus, students were treated to a performance by Aboriginal performance students at WAAPA and an acting workshop in Kurongkurl Katitjin. The day ended with some future career exploration at the SkillsWest Careers & Employment Expo at the Perth Convention Centre. Students got to interact with and explore future career opportunities with over 140 organizations and employers.

The camp finished on Friday with a visit to our partner Holcim. Students had the opportunity to see first-hand the operations of Holcim at their Gosnells Quarry, learning about the many roles available in the industry. Quarry Manager – Scott, provided students with a safety induction and gave an overview of how a quarry and plant operate. The students enjoyed seeing a spectacular view of the quarry from the lookout, as well as the concrete batching plant. Special thanks to all the Holcim staff who took time out of their busy day to meet the students and discuss their employment pathways with Holcim.
