NAIDOC WEEK 2021
This year at Merredin College we celebrated NAIDOC Week focusing on the theme of ‘Heal Country’. Throughout the week we hosted multiple events, starting with a brilliant opening ceremony on Monday morning overlooking the Aboriginal mural in our East Quad. In the afternoon our Aboriginal Secondary and Primary Leaders took their favourite Dreamtime stories to the Primary school and shared them with our youngest students.
Tuesday was a day organised by Njaki Njaki Aboriginal Cultural Tours, which had four yarning circles full of valuable Aboriginal culture. Students were also able to sample some damper made by Nanna Debbo. On Wednesday Ms Chrissi Smith created maemaes with our students whilst the community came down and versed our Year 7 and 8 students in Netball and Basketball. Thursday was the centrepiece of NAIDOC week; the NAIDOC cup, a football game between Year 5-7 students. The whole school came down to the oval as the two teams put on a great show. Congratulations to for taking home the game ball for Best on Ground. Students had their faces painted in traditional colours, and the Heal Country mural painting was completed after a mountain of work by Ms Smith and secondary students.
Finally on Friday we had our sand art project, which was on showcase in our closing ceremony. A huge thank you to all community organisations, community members, families, Elders, businesses and staff at Merredin College for your support throughout the week. We could not have had such a successful week if not for everyone.
