Year 1 – Term 1
Maths in Year One
The Year One class has settled beautifully into the new school year and have already been busy learning many exciting things. One of the highlights of their day is our Maths lesson!
We begin our Maths block with Bond Blocks, where students build strong number sense and develop their understanding of how numbers work. During this time, students explore concepts such as number order, teen numbers, numbers before and after, and locating numbers on a number line. It’s a very hands-on session where students manipulate wooden blocks, solve problems and play a range of engaging games to reinforce their learning.
Following this, students move into their Origo Stepping Stones lesson, the mathematics program used at Merredin College. Each week we explore a different mathematical concept through discussions, activities and problem solving. So far this term, students have been learning about teen numbers, place value and addition. Currently, they are exploring the days of the week and how calendars help us organise time.
It has been wonderful to see the student’s developing confidence in their mathematical thinking while enjoying learning through games, hands-on materials and collaborative activities.
