Merredin College students have been getting into the spirit of Book Week with a fun and engaging Blind Date with a Book activity!

The idea was discovered by our librarians while searching for creative ways to celebrate Book Week and encourage our secondary students to get involved. English classes visited the library for their scheduled silent reading, but with a twist on their usual routine – this time, we chose the books for them!

Students could choose from a wide variety of books, including picture books, fiction, non-fiction, graphic novels, joke books, fact books, look-and-find books and comics. Each book was wrapped in white paper, with five words attached to the front describing the book – without revealing its title.

Students then selected their “blind date” based purely on the clues that caught their attention. It was fantastic to see them guessing titles, sharing their clues with friends and, best of all, returning to choose more books!

Year 11 student Owain was particularly enthusiastic. After reading his first book, he returned for a second and then a third! He even discovered a Dr Seuss book and commented that he hadn’t read one in years and was really enjoying it.

At the end of the session, Owain came back to our librarians with the ultimate review:

“That was excellent – ten out of ten!”

We’ve received fantastic feedback from students across all Secondary year levels, with students fully engaged, reading multiple books, sharing clues and discussing their choices with friends.
