Science Week: Decoding the Universe

This week classrooms across Merredin College were buzzing with curiosity, creativity, and hands-on exploration as we celebrated National Science Week 2025. This year’s theme, Decoding the Universe – Exploring the Unknown with Nature’s Hidden Language, inspired students from Kindergarten to Year 6 to take on fascinating STEM challenges, make surprising discoveries, and look at the world in new ways.
In Primary, our young scientists embraced a range of activities that encouraged observation, problem-solving, and pattern recognition—skills at the heart of scientific thinking. Activities ranged from studying the intricate details of leaves in Nature & Art Observations, creating colourful patterns in Sensory Stamps, and learning to track animals in Decoding Animal Prints, to building sundials in Decoding Shadows, exploring the wonders of the Fibonacci sequence in flowers, and even communicating in code with torches in Communicate with Light. Upper primary students took on big-picture thinking with our Large-Scale Solar System activity, moving as planets and asteroids to understand the vast distances and patterns of our universe.
Secondary students and staff have been celebrating Science Week in line with the theme Decoding the Universe by participating in a variety of exciting lunchtime activities that tested curiosity, problem-solving, and teamwork skills.
On Monday, we explored What’s Hiding in Plain Sight, where participants decoded mystery microscope images.
On Tuesday, they took part in Classified Secrets, cracking secret codes and piecing together puzzles.
On Thursday, we Launched into Space by throwing meteors to score points for our Houses.
To end the week with a bang, we gathered on the oval to launch rockets and reveal our Science Week House winners—in true science fashion—with an explosive display of ‘Elephant’s Toothpaste’!
🏆 Congratulations to Law House, who took 1st place with 910 points in Science Week!
🥈 2nd place: Mitchell – 900 points
🥉 3rd place: Kelly – 780 points
🏅 4th place: Growden – 510 points
Throughout the week, students not only explored the science curriculum but also made connections to First Nations knowledge systems, learning how patterns, observations, and natural signs have been read and understood for thousands of years.
A huge thank you to our teachers for preparing such engaging activities and to our students for approaching each challenge with curiosity and enthusiasm. Science Week 2025 was truly a celebration of learning, exploration, and the wonders of our universe.
