‘Wynnis’ – Musica Viva Incursion

‘Wynnis’ – Musica Viva Incursion

This year we were lucky to have a musical group called Wynnis from the Torres Strait Islands came to Merredin College and performed for us last week. A group of four musicians who wore their traditional costumes and played the instruments from their own culture. From spinning tops to string figures, this wildly entertaining and colourfully costumed ensemble showed how culture and history are passed on through singing and dancing. By comparing their own childhood games to those from the remote Torres Strait, students came to understand the importance of traditions, and to be thankful to those who teach them. The performance was made available through Musica Viva. Musica Viva has been bringing premium quality live music to Australian schools for over 35 years. They specialize in presenting the best small ensembles Australia has to offer – dynamic, accessible and culturally diverse groups that perform in a wide variety of music styles. Our students had a fantastic time learning about their culture and being involved in their music. It was a wonderful experience for everyone who attended.
